In the heart of Samburu County, where tradition meets transformation, one woman has become a powerful symbol of change—Dr. Josephine Kulea. She is not only a daughter of the Samburu soil but a fearless human rights defender, educator and the founder of the Samburu Girls Foundation (SGF).

Born and raised in a pastoralist community, Dr. Kulea witnessed firsthand the harmful cultural practices that continue to affect girls in Northern Kenya. Practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), early and forced marriages and beading (a tradition where young girls are temporarily "engaged" to warriors) were seen as normal. But Josephine refused to be silent.

With deep personal conviction, she chose a different path—one rooted in education, advocacy, and compassion. After completing her studies in nursing and community development, she launched SGF in 2011. Since then, her foundation has rescued over 1,000 girls and supported many more in accessing education and safety.

What makes Dr. Kulea unique is not only her bravery but her ability to challenge deep-rooted traditions without disrespecting her culture. She works with elders, leaders, and families to raise awareness and build new ways of protecting girls, while still honoring Samburu identity.

Her work has drawn recognition from across the globe. She has received national awards, spoken at international forums, and was even praised by former U.S. President Barack Obama for her commitment to justice and human dignity.

But despite the fame, Josephine remains grounded. Her heart is with the girls of Samburu, the voiceless who dream of becoming doctors, teachers, and leaders. She is living proof that one voice, when rooted in truth and love, can move mountains.

Looking ahead, Dr. Josephine Kulea is expected to contest for the position of Women Representative in Samburu County in 2027. Her candidacy is already inspiring many, especially young women, to believe in leadership that is both bold and compassionate. If elected, she will bring with her a deep understanding of grassroots challenges and a clear vision for empowerment.

A Wild Tuesday at Lake Nakuru: Safari Moments I’ll Never Forget

Tuesday morning began with calm skies and quiet excitement at Sweet Bargain Hotel, where my travel companion, Mykel Board, and I enjoyed an early breakfast. What we didn’t know then was that we were about to have one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences of our lives.

We caught an Uber and made our way to Lake Nakuru National Park via the scenic Lanet Gate. Mykel, a true travel enthusiast, generously covered our park entry fees—$62 for him and $14 for me—as well as a fully equipped safari car from Clarion Tours and Travel Agencies for $100. The service was top-tier, and our driver-guide knew the terrain like the back of his hand.

Into the Wild

The moment we entered the park, nature greeted us in full force. We were surrounded by breathtaking views and vibrant wildlife. In just a few hours, we saw:

• Buffalos grazing lazily by the bushes

• Zebras strutting with grace across the grasslands.
• Playful baboons and curious monkeys
• Warthogs, flamingos, and even majestic hippos relaxing in the water
• Graceful gazelles, towering giraffes, and powerful rhinos

Every corner of Lake Nakuru held a new surprise. The highlight of the day was reaching the Makalia Viewpoint. From here, we watched the dramatic Makalia Waterfall cascade into the lush forest below. The sound, the mist, the feeling—it was magical.

Back to Nakuru Town

After hours in the wild, we returned to Nakuru town with stories in our hearts and hunger in our bellies. Lunch was delicious, the town was alive, and the memories were already beginning to form in our minds.

As we headed back to our hotel, one thing was clear: This was more than a safari—it was a celebration of nature, friendship, and the beauty of Kenya.

For years, Samburu County has been seen only through the lens of hardship—conflict, drought, and isolation. But beyond the headlines lies a deeper truth: Samburu is not poor. We are simply untapped.

From the fertile highlands of Porro to the rugged cattle-rich plains of Baragoi, this county is bursting with economic potential. The question is no longer “Can Samburu rise?” It is “How fast can we organize ourselves to rise together?”

1. Agriculture: The Sleeping Giant

As a farmer myself, I’ve seen firsthand what our land can do. With just 10 acres, I’ve grown potatoes, cabbages, and hope. The Porro Highlands alone could feed northern Kenya—if only we had access to water, storage, and modern tools.

Imagine what 1,000 youth could do with small greenhouses, drip irrigation, and cold rooms. Agriculture could employ thousands if supported properly.

2. Livestock with a Market Focus

Samburu is home to some of the most resilient breeds of cattle, goats, and camels in Kenya. Yet we still sell them at throwaway prices in local markets. Why not build a meat processing plant in Maralal or a leather hub in Suguta?

Value addition could turn every herder into an investor, and every cow into capital. Our livestock economy just needs a strategy—not charity.

3. Youth Innovation and Hustle

Our youth are not lazy. They are under-equipped. Given the right tools—tech hubs, welding equipment, media kits, farming gear—they would run Samburu’s economy within five years.

Look around: From boda riders to digital creators, youth are already building small empires. We just need more investment and mentorship—not handouts.

4. Tourism and Culture

We host one of the richest cultural heritages and wildlife corridors in East Africa. Yet most hotels and tour revenues bypass the locals. We need a Samburu Tourism Board led by locals, for locals.

With the right marketing, trails, and cultural experiences, tourism can bring millions into community projects and create jobs in every village.

So, What’s Holding Us Back?

Lack of information. Disunity. And sometimes, the belief that we can’t lead ourselves.

But here’s what I believe: We have everything we need—land, youth, livestock, culture, and the will to grow. What we need now is vision, planning, and unity.

When my friend decided to farm his family’s  an acres in Porro Highlands, he had no funding, and no farming degree. What he had was a vision—to turn bare soil into food, into hope, into economic power. He started with potatoes and cabbages, and through hardship, he discovered his mission: empowering others to rise from the soil, not just with crops—but with dignity and purpose.

Why Empowerment Starts With Us

• Empowerment is Local: No outsider understands our struggles better than we do. We know our land, our youth, our potential.
• Empowerment is Practical: Planting vegetables, raising livestock, opening a small business—these are acts of revolution.

We’ve been programmed to believe that farming is for the poor. That gumboots are a sign of failure. But what if I told you farming could make you a millionaire? Not in theory — in reality.

The Secret That the World Is Using (That We're Ignoring)

I am not a politician, nor a big investor. I am a son of this soil, a farmer, a father, and a voice for my community. I have seen the pain in the eyes of elders who lost their cattle to bandit raids. I have seen mothers walk miles for water. I’ve watched young people give up hope, not because they are lazy, but because they lack opportunity.

But I have also seen resilience. I have seen what one small farm can do. A single acre of well-tended potatoes can feed a family, generate income, and restore dignity. I have walked through green fields that were once barren and watched the joy of harvest return to homes.

That is why I am committed to building a future rooted in sustainable farming and community empowerment. My dream is not just to plant crops, but to plant change—across Samburu County. With the right support, we can drill water, introduce smart farming tools, and create value chains that benefit everyone, from the highland farmer to the market vendor.

Even the best ideas need funding. That’s why savings groups (chamas), SACCOs, and digital loans are important.

We also need to learn how to manage money—avoid bad debts, and invest in productive ventures. I believe in creating ways to help young farmers and small traders raise funds—both locally and online.

3. Empowering Women and Youth

Women are the backbone of our households and our local economy. Yet many are left behind when opportunities arise.

We must ensure women and youth get fair access to land, capital, and training. When women and young people rise, the entire community benefits.

Why GoFundMe Is Not Accepted in Kenya – Understanding the Barriers to Crowdfunding

 In today’s digital world, crowdfunding has become a powerful tool for raising money, whether for personal emergencies, community projects, or social causes. One of the most popular platforms globally is GoFundMe, widely used in countries like the United States, Canada, and parts of Europe. However, many Kenyans have noticed that GoFundMe is not available in Kenya. But why is this the case? Let’s break it down.

1. Limited Country Support by GoFundMe

GoFundMe only supports fundraising in select countries, mostly in North America and Western Europe. As of now, the platform allows campaign creation in only 19 countries. Unfortunately, Kenya and most African countries are not on that list.

This limitation is largely due to payment processing, banking infrastructure, and regulatory compliance. To operate in a country, GoFundMe needs to ensure secure, seamless payment transfers in and out of that country. Many African countries, including Kenya, have complex financial regulations, which makes it harder for foreign platforms to operate efficiently.

2. Payment Gateways and Currency Issues

GoFundMe primarily uses Stripe and PayPal for handling payments. While PayPal is available in Kenya, Stripe is not, and that creates a huge challenge. Without both payment gateways working hand-in-hand, GoFundMe cannot guarantee safe and reliable fund transfers.

Interestingly, many Kenyans still benefit from GoFundMe – but only indirectly. Usually, a relative or friend in the USA, UK, or Canada creates a campaign on their behalf, collects donations, and then sends the money back home via Western Union, WorldRemit, or bank transfer.

This workaround shows the high demand for crowdfunding – and also the need for more locally adapted platforms that can build trust, transparency, and convenience for African users.
