The Power is in Your Hands: How We Can Build Samburu from the Ground Up
By Albert Letowon
In the heart of Samburu, a quiet revolution is growing—not in the halls of government, but on the farms, in the markets, and among the youth who have decided to stop waiting and start building.
We were raised to believe that change comes from somewhere else. That someone will arrive one day with answers. That jobs will come, that water will be drilled, that opportunities will knock. But here is the truth—no one is coming unless we move first.
When my friend decided to farm his family’s an acres in Porro Highlands, he had no funding, and no farming degree. What he had was a vision—to turn bare soil into food, into hope, into economic power. He started with potatoes and cabbages, and through hardship, he discovered his mission: empowering others to rise from the soil, not just with crops—but with dignity and purpose.
Why Empowerment Starts With Us
- Empowerment is Local: No outsider understands our struggles better than we do. We know our land, our youth, our potential.
- Empowerment is Practical: Planting vegetables, raising livestock, opening a small business—these are acts of revolution.
- Empowerment is Contagious: When one youth rises, others follow. When one mama starts a shop, a whole village eats.
We must stop the mindset of waiting. You don’t need millions to start something that matters. You need an idea. You need consistency. And above all—you need faith in yourself.
The Journey Ahead
My dream is bigger than farming. I want to train youth, drill clean water, invest in modern tools, and one day, establish a foundation that supports economic projects across Samburu County.
This journey will not be easy. But I believe in what we can do together. If you are reading this and feeling stuck—start something small today. One seed. One post. One bold idea. That's how the future begins.
“The power is in your hands. You are not too poor to try. You are not too late to begin.”
Share this story with someone who needs hope. Let’s rise—not as beggars, but as builders of a better Samburu.
