As young people of Samburu County, we are all striving for opportunities, growth, and unity. In recent days, there has been a lot of talk about the Samburu Youth Council (SYC)—an initiative that seems to have raised both interest and concern among many youth in our communities.
Unfortunately, a lot of confusion has surrounded SYC. Some young people are expressing strong support, while others are hesitant or openly questioning it. In the middle of this, what we truly need is clarity and inclusiveness—not division.
Many youths have pointed out that they were not aware of any participation process to elect SYC officials. There was no known public forum, no consultations in the wards, and no elections held to determine who would speak on behalf of the larger youth population. As it stands, SYC appears to be an idea that still needs more openness, explanation, and involvement from the wider Samburu youth.
This is not to criticize or reject anyone, but rather to call for a fair, respectful, and transparent process moving forward. We believe in development, representation, and leadership—but we also believe these must be achieved through genuine inclusion of all voices.
We are therefore kindly asking those who introduced the idea of SYC to:
Clearly explain what SYC is about
Share its goals and structure
Clarify how the officials were selected
Outline how it intends to benefit all youth equally across Samburu County
Our message is simple: If SYC is a good and meaningful project for youth empowerment, it deserves our support—but only after the youth have been fully informed and included in its development. And if it's not working for all, then honest conversations should be encouraged to improve or reframe it.
As Samburu youth, let us stay peaceful, respectful, and united as we seek truth and understanding. No one should speak on behalf of the youth unless the youth have been truly consulted and given a chance to participate.
Let’s keep our conversations constructive and focused on solutions. Let’s lead with wisdom, respect, and the spirit of unity.
