Agriculture in Porro Upper:

 By Alberto melody

Agriculture has always been the heartbeat of Porro Upper, a region blessed with fertile highlands, hardworking farmers, and a strong community spirit. For years, our people have relied on farming not only for food security but also as a source of income and independence. Today, more than ever, farming holds the key to unlocking the economic potential of our region—and we are beginning to see the winds of change blowing in the right direction.

One of the most encouraging steps forward has been the recent support from our very own Governor, Hon. Lati Lelelit, who, through the county government, generously awarded farmers in Porro Upper with high-quality maize seeds. This is not just a gift; it is a strategic investment in the backbone of Samburu County—agriculture.

We sincerely thank Hon. Lati for his visionary leadership and for believing in the power of rural farming communities. These improved maize seeds will not only increase our yields but also give hope to many smallholder farmers who had lost confidence due to poor harvests in the past. This is a leader who listens, understands the grassroots, and takes real action to uplift his people.

In Porro Upper, the response to this initiative has been overwhelmingly positive. Farmers—both young and old—have taken to their shambas with renewed energy and optimism. The maize seeds came at the right time, and with good rains, we are already seeing early signs of success in our fields. This season promises a bumper harvest, and with it, more food, better incomes, and stronger households.

Agriculture is no longer just about survival; it is about growth, development, and empowerment. The people of Porro Upper are proving that, with the right tools and support, we can transform our lives through farming.

We also want to encourage the youth of Porro Upper and Samburu County at large to take farming seriously. Farming is not outdated; it is the future. It can create jobs, support families, and bring lasting development when done with purpose and modern techniques. With support like what we’ve received from the county government, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.

We urge the county leadership and development partners to continue supporting agriculture by:

1.Providing quality seeds and farm inputs

2.Improving access to extension services

3.Investing in irrigation and water projects

4.Connecting farmers to reliable markets

As a community, we must also support one another, share knowledge, and work together to build a better agricultural system for future generations.

Once again, we thank Governor Lati Lelelit and the entire county administration for empowering Porro Upper farmers with the tools to succeed. This is what leadership looks like—investing in real people, with real needs, and creating lasting impact.

Let’s keep planting, growing, and building Samburu County from the ground up—one seed at a time.

Understanding the Samburu Youth Council: A Call for Unity and Clarity

By Alberto melody

As young people of Samburu County, we are all striving for opportunities, growth, and unity. In recent days, there has been a lot of talk about the Samburu Youth Council (SYC)—an initiative that seems to have raised both interest and concern among many youth in our communities.

Unfortunately, a lot of confusion has surrounded SYC. Some young people are expressing strong support, while others are hesitant or openly questioning it. In the middle of this, what we truly need is clarity and inclusiveness—not division.

Many youths have pointed out that they were not aware of any participation process to elect SYC officials. There was no known public forum, no consultations in the wards, and no elections held to determine who would speak on behalf of the larger youth population. As it stands, SYC appears to be an idea that still needs more openness, explanation, and involvement from the wider Samburu youth.

This is not to criticize or reject anyone, but rather to call for a fair, respectful, and transparent process moving forward. We believe in development, representation, and leadership—but we also believe these must be achieved through genuine inclusion of all voices.

We are therefore kindly asking those who introduced the idea of SYC to:

Clearly explain what SYC is about

Share its goals and structure

Clarify how the officials were selected

Outline how it intends to benefit all youth equally across Samburu County

Our message is simple: If SYC is a good and meaningful project for youth empowerment, it deserves our support—but only after the youth have been fully informed and included in its development. And if it's not working for all, then honest conversations should be encouraged to improve or reframe it.

As Samburu youth, let us stay peaceful, respectful, and united as we seek truth and understanding. No one should speak on behalf of the youth unless the youth have been truly consulted and given a chance to participate.

Let’s keep our conversations constructive and focused on solutions. Let’s lead with wisdom, respect, and the spirit of unity.
